I love the title of this show. Journey to the Center of the Uterus: Adventures Infertility does a great job of telling you what you need to know: it deals with infertility, and it’s funny. Extremely funny, in fact.
And I love this show. Definitely one of the best productions I’ve had the pleasure of representing. A perfect example of comedy’s noble power to communicate, and to lessen the pain of life’s great traumas. In this Journey, humor is skillfully applied to allow us to laugh our way through a very personal story of pain, loss and perseverance.
Playwright and star Kathleen Puls Andrade (of Put The Nuns In Charge, the long-running sequel to Late Night Catechism) takes us through her struggles to bear a child with her husband, Pep. She is terrific. Immediately funny and likable, she has the audience laughing throughout, but is also unflinching and brave in depicting her darkest moments. And while the serious points give appropriate gravity to the subject matter, this is most definitely a comedy. The show moves along at a brisk pace with Kathleen jumping from character to character, portraying doctors, family & friends, and even Pep himself to great comedic effect.
Helping to bring Kathleen’s story to life is the skillful direction and hilarious animation of Andrew Eninger, an accomplished Chicago actor, director and playwright (not to mention a sperm donor with his own adventure in fertility). Add to that the fantastic original music by multi-talented Marshall Stern, and you have yourself a truly exceptional show.
Don’t take my word for it. Just look at this audience feedback:
“Extremely entertaining… Puls exuded constant energy. Besides the script’s hilarity and Puls’ talent as a performer, the show also had a great sense of meaning.”

“Kathleen’s delivery is pitch perfect – she’s funny, cathartic, poignant, spirited, illuminating, and did I mention funny? Journey approaches the challenges of human experience with humor and pathos. I feel so grateful to live in a city where an abundant talent like Kathleen’s can enliven an already rich theater scene. You don’t want to miss it.”

“As Lead Support Group of Pre-Adoption for Resolve, Chicago Chapter, I am happy to recommend all my members to her show. It talks in sensitive way about a very serious and difficult topic. Couples dealing with infertility will applaud her candid talk, but I also hope that other families will learn, and support their loved ones going through that difficult stage. Bravo to Kathleen for a fantastic show!”
